What is Vitamin B12?

B12 plays an essential role in enhancing the metabolic function of the cells, this nutrient can boost energy, improve memory and help prevent heart disease. Not having enough B12 can lead to anaemia, which means your body does not have enough red blood cells to do the job. This can make you feel weak and tired. A deficiency of this vital vitamin can cause damage to your nerves and can affect memory and thinking.

Vitamin B12 enhances the metabolic function of the cells helping to boost energy release, support overall wellbeing and enhance physical health.

It’s found naturally in animal products but if you’re a Vegetarian or Vegan you’re not going to be eating meat or dairy which contains the essential B12 vitamin.

How Vitamin B12 injections work?

Hydroxocobalamin is a manufactured version of vitamin B12 and given via injection intramuscularly in the upper arm.

It works by increasing and quickly elevating your levels of vitamin B12 so that you can make red blood cells that work properly to carry oxygen around your body which then helps to reduce symptoms such as tiredness and lack of energy.

B12 helps your body use fat and carbohydrates for energy and makes new protein. Supplementing and boosting B12 via injection is the most effective way for your body to absorb Vitamin B12, and within 48 to 72 hours, your body will begin to make new red blood cells.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

This treatment is not suitable for you if you;

  • have had an allergic reaction to hydroxocobalamin or any other medicines in the past

  • have been told you have low levels of potassium

  • have an irregular or fast heartbeat

It also may not be suitable if you have ever experienced allergies towards makeup or tattoos.

FAQ’s:

What is the downtime?

There is no downtime to this treatment.

Does it hurt?

As with many intramuscular injections you’ll likely feel a sharp scratch.

Your arm may feel heavy, itchy or slightly bruised at the injection site but these side effects generally pass quickly.

Are you a registered nurse?

No, but be assured I have undergone intensive training and I am fully accredited and qualified. My product stock is ordered in as needed via a registered prescriber.

Do I need a blood test to confirm if I'm B12 deficient?

These conditions can often be diagnosed based on your symptoms though if you feel your symptoms are chronic then i do encourage you to book an appointment for blood work with your GP as there is a chance that you may be suffering from an underlying condition such as pernicious anemia which could qualify you for free injections from the NHS.

However, if you do have blood work done note that the drawback is that the current widely used test to check B12 levels only measures the total amount o vitamin B12 in your blood, meaning, it measures the forms of active B12 which your body can use and process as well as the inactive forms which cannot.

Also it's worth noting that if you have blood work conducted and it returns as falling within "the normal range" then know that "normal" does not equal optimal and therefore, if you do suffer any of the symptoms noted above with "normal levels" then you may well benefit from the extra boost.

How do you know what dose I require, can I have too much?

I offer 1mg doses in 1ml injections as is often standard in private healthcare. The treatment is safe in that you cannot overdose on vitamin B12 as your body will flush any excess B12 out of your system via urination.

How many injections do I need?

An advised treatment plan for maximum results is 1 injection per week for 4 weeks then 1 injection per month.

How long will it take for me to feel any benefit?

The injection starts to work straight away. However, it may take a few days or weeks before your symptoms start to improve.

What are the side effects?

B12 injections are generally safe and side effects do not tend to occur in most people, but like all medicines, hydroxocobalamin can cause side effects in some people and even if side effects occur they should pass quickly.

Common side effects may include diarrhoea, nausea, headaches/ dizziness, hot flushes.

Very rare but more serious side effects include irregular heartbeats/ palpitations or in extremely rare cases can cause an allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) but I have an EpiPen at hand to treat you immediately should this extremely rare occurrence happen.
